c++ - inspecting / forensics on an exe -

our company acquired company , 1 of products c++ exe, original developer not available , don;t have source code. have exe. can explore exe? inspect it? maybe reverse engineer thinking of using regedit see whether works registry, maybe trying visual studio.

any appreciated.

you try procmon if want monitor files/registry/etc accesses.

for program itself, there disassemblers can @ least convert assembly language. depending on size , complexity of program that's not helpful.

there might tools can attempt convert resembling c or c++ code. i've heard of such things being attempted, don't know how effective they've ever been. know if worked @ all, results wouldn't have variable or function names.

whether assembly or higher level, leave lot of work left human figure out what's going on in program. investment of time , effort might better spent developing new replacement according whatever kind of specifications or behavior documented or else can observed.
