ip - Larger packets than Ethernet frame can handle -
ipv4 , ipv6 allow packets of 65,535 bytes. ethernet frames supposedly allows payloads of 1522 bytes.
how work? there no sequence numbers in ethernet frames ensure order, makes recreating larger ip packet ethernet frames difficult...
several points in bullet form:
- ip packets can fragmented (see ip fragmentation): fragmentation , reassembly of ip datagrams specified within ip.
- the layer encapsulating ip given flow may not ethernet end end (or @ all, see gre)
- path mtu means of determining maximum transmission unit given flow.
- within network, jumbo frames may enabled increase ethernet frame size 9000.
